Ensemble castle area and market settlement

File number E-2-71-153-1

The ensemble includes the medieval castle area with the market settlement at the foot of the castle hill within the limits of their former fortifications.

The castle seat Winzer above the left bank of the Danube, first mentioned in 1005, but already belonging to the older royal estate, came into the possession of the Bamberg church in 1009, which gave the bailiwick rights to the Wittelsbachers in 1252. The Puchbergers, who were the landlords of the castle from the 13th to the 16th century, obtained the right to build a market-like forecourt southwest of the castle hill from Duke Stefan von Niederbayern in 1307 . The market settlement was fortified and connected to the fortifications of the castle. After the castle was destroyed in 1744, at least the medieval market fortifications are still preserved in the remains of the wall. The original Winzer development fell victim to a fire in 1829 and was rebuilt with a stricter floor plan in the late classical style.

The narrow, rectangular market place is delimited by two closed rows of two-storey, eaves-sided residential stalls with rear service wings divided parallel to the ridge. Facing the space, simple Biedermeier facades with small front gardens, only partially preserved on the northeast side, convey a small-town character. The head buildings of the rows have hipped roofs. Detached houses (Passauer Straße 11, Höllgasse 1 and Ringstraße 2) delimit the narrow sides of the square, the severity of which is emphasized by two rows of trees. A third, parallel row of houses on the Ringstrasse with corresponding ridge-divided residential stables follows the former south-western fortification wall. The individual buildings rising to the castle hill combine the market settlement and towering castle ruins to form an impressive townscape.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
