history

Until the church is planted

The first documentary mention comes from the year 1005. The place Winzer / Donau is older. In prehistoric times, the area was sparsely populated, but not uninhabited. Finds from that time prove this. However, the discovery of some terra sigillata pieces and a Roman coin at the foot of the castle hill does not yet indicate that the Romans once settled. The first permanent settlement should have existed before 950. This was in today's Unterwinzer near the church. The name winemaker comes from "viticulture" and is derived from the Latin "Vinitor" = winemaker-winemaker. At the beginning of the 19th century there were several vineyards here.

The whole area was originally owned by the Bavarian Duke. This gave the area around 1009 to the bishop of Bamberg. A so-called ministerial officer was appointed to administer it. This then built the Burg Winzer in the middle of the 11th century and called himself "Winzerer". From 1230 the "winemakers" became noble knights. In 1324 the family died out.

The Puchbergers came here through the marriage of Hildebrand von Puchberg (near Cham) to Eufemia von Winzer. These were one of the richest and most respected knight families in the Bavarian Forest. In their coat of arms they have three crescents like these can still be seen today in the municipal coat of arms. In the municipal coat of arms there is also a bunch of grapes as an indication of the viticulture attested since the 9th century.

At the foot of the castle hill a pure "rule market" was created, but it did not acquire any special significance. Presumably this originated in 1307 when the Duke allowed the Puchbergers to build a forecourt under his castle (on the Säcker). This new settlement was even included in the fortification system of the castle. Few remains of the wall are still preserved today. No special permit was required for this so-called manorial market establishment. On October 16, 1322, the Lower Bavarian dukes Hartlieb von Puchberg granted market freedom for the settlement : “privilegia mercatus publici”, document no. 342. Now all foreigners could come together with every type of goods, conduct free trade, buy and sell. This "local trade market" was held on the square-like extended thoroughfare between the eastern and western market gate in Oberwinzer.

The last Jakob from Puchberg had no male heir. His daughter Elisabeth married the later Count Ott-Heinrich von Schwarzenberg. Now the castle and rule passed to the Schwarzenbergs . But already the 2nd generation under Wolf Jakob had to sell the property in 1603. The later Bavarian elector Maximilian acquired the castle and dominion and was therefore no longer just the sovereign, but also the landlord of the winegrowers. In 1591 the market, which in the meantime expanded towards medium-sized vintners, consisted of only 44 houses. There was a bath, beer tavern, grocer, landlord, binder, locksmith, blacksmith, two bakers and two tailors. The hospital was between the upper and lower winemakers (market and village) . In the second half of the 16th century, four administration buildings belonging to the castle were erected in Mittelwinzer (court clerk, wheat beer brewery, magistrate and nursing court house - current town hall).

During the Austrian War of Succession , the Pandurs blew up the castle on November 1, 1744. It was no longer built. At the beginning of the 19th century the colonies of Pledl, Reckenberg and Grafenhölzl were established. The influx of many new settlers resulted in great poverty. The search for a source of income led to a special development in winemakers. Baskets were fenced in from the wild pastures on the banks of the Danube and in the floodplains and sold. Soon the winemakers in the whole area were called "basket fencers".

The basket-making trade was structurally decisive. When the communities were formed in 1818, Winzer became an independent rural community .

Incorporations

In the course of the municipal area reform, part of the dissolved municipality of Schwanenkirchen was added on April 1, 1971 . On May 1, 1978 the community Neßlbach followed with 1041 inhabitants.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the market grew from 3,302 to 3,846 by 544 inhabitants or 16.5%. On December 31, 2003 Winzer had 3,913 inhabitants.
