The place Winzer is mentioned for the first time in 1005 in a deed of gift. From 1324 to 1558 the castle was owned by the Lords of Puchberg and from 1558 to 1603 by the Lords of Schwarzenberg . Otto Heinrich von Schwarzenberg, who was the most powerful and richest knight of all the lords of Winzer, had the castle enlarged. After 1603 ownership went to Bavaria.
