List of honorary citizens of Kiel
The city of Kiel has granted the following people - in chronological order - honorary citizenship:
- 1841: Georg Hanssen , professor for economics and statistics, because of his commitment to the Altona-Kieler Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft
- 1843: Christoph Heinrich Pfaff , Professor of Physics and Chemistry on the occasion of his 50th doctoral anniversary
- 1863: Duke Karl of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg , commander of the Lauenburg Jägerkorps in Kiel on his silver wedding anniversary
- 1864: Georg Friedrich Witte , City Counsel, because of the creation of the Altona-Kiel Railway
- 1893: Johann Christian Kruse , merchant and consul, for representing the interests of the city with manly courage and dignity
- 1894: Werner Kraus , City Councilor and Government Councilor, for his services to building schools in Kiel
- 1899: Klaus Groth , Professor of German Language and Literature, for his services to the Low German language
- 1902: Friedrich von Esmarch , professor of surgery and ophthalmology (on his 80th birthday)
- 1911: Prince Heinrich of Prussia , Imperial Grand Admiral
- 1911: Albert Hänel , law professor, as the creator of the Schleswig-Holstein city code
- 1914: Hans von Koester , Grand Admiral (on his 70th birthday)
- 1946: Otto Tschadek , Acting Lord Mayor (farewell to Kiel)
- 1947: Max Planck , professor of theoretical physics and founder of quantum theory
- 1950: Wilhelm Anschütz , Secret Medical Councilor

- 2004: Berthold Beitz , for his promotion of sport in Kiel
Adolf Hitler and Erich Raeder were deprived of their honorary citizenship in 1945. Due to a procedural error, Raeder's disqualification was revoked in 1956, but a few days after the decision, Raeder voluntarily renounced honorary citizenship. Paul von Hindenburg was deprived of his honorary citizenship in January 2014 by a council resolution.
