Karl (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg)
Duke Karl of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (born September 30, 1813 at Gottorf Castle , Schleswig ; † October 24, 1878 at Louisenlund ) was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg family , a branch of the Oldenburg family .
Life
Karl was the eldest son of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1785–1831) and his wife Princess Luise Karoline (1789–1867), the youngest daughter of Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel .
He embarked on the Danish officer career and made it to the position of colonel and commander of the 5th Jägercorps. With the death of his father on February 17, 1831, he became the second Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and took care of the extensive estates.
On May 19, 1838, Karl married Princess Wilhelmine in Copenhagen , the daughter of King Friedrich VI. von Denmark and his wife Marie von Hessen-Kassel . Wilhelmine had previously been married to Prince Friedrich of Denmark, who later became King Friedrich VII, from 1828 until her divorce in 1837 .
In 1840 he acquired the goods Loitmark (Danish: Løjtmark), the district is called Loitfeld in German, and Espenis (Danish: Espenæs) on the Schlei , in 1855 also Gut Grünholz . On May 19, 1863, the city of Kiel granted him honorary citizenship on the occasion of his silver wedding anniversary .
The marriage remained childless. Karl's heir and successor was his younger brother Friedrich . He is a member of the Altona Masonic Lodge Carl zum Felsen .
