Carl Andreas August Goos (born August 6, 1797 in Schleswig ; † July 12, 1855 there ) was a history, genre and portrait painter.

Life

Goos was the son of the Schleswig painter, varnisher and gilders Johann Peter Loos (1763-1837). Since 1819 he attended the drawing school of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein in Eutin , whom he helped with the completion of the large-format paintings for the so-called "Homer Room" of the residence in Oldenburg . He also copied Tischbein's works and in 1820 successfully applied for a Danish state scholarship with a painting Odysseus and Penelope , which enabled him to attend the art academy in Copenhagen . His friends included Harro Harring , Herman Wilhelm Bissen and Friedrich Bernhard Westphal from Schleswig-Holstein .

In 1823, 1825 and 1827 Goos failed in the competition for the great gold medal of the Copenhagen Art Academy, so that he returned to his hometown Schleswig frustrated. Thanks to the support of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg) , whom he portrayed with his family, Goos was able to stay afloat as a portrait painter. In November 1829 he was called to Eutin to complete pictures of his late teacher Tischbein.

Under the influence of his friend Friedrich Bernhard Westphal and the Munich painter Josef Petzl , who was in Schleswig in 1830, Goos gave up late Classicist history painting and painted a number of small-format genre pictures in the taste of Biedermeier , which failed at exhibitions in Hamburg and Dresden. Goos then gave up and limited himself to working as a portrait painter and drawing teacher. For the village churches in his home region he painted some altarpieces based on the example of Leonardo's Last Supper . These successful acquisition is a subject of Jesus blessing the children of Friedrich Overbeck for the Church in Sieseby in Schleswig.
