List of the Counts of Stolberg

The Counts of Stolberg are a widespread noble family of the Holy Roman Empire , with possessions primarily in the Lower Harz . By inheritance contracts, areas in Hesse also fell to the House of Stolberg. All Stolberg territories and their rulers are listed below. The origin of the noble family Stolberg has not been established for certain. Most likely, an inheritance division of the Honstein-Vockstedt county, which is under the rule of the Honsteins , after 1240. Until about the 17th century, there were certain uncertainties regarding the ruling count, possible earlier divisions and the chronological order.

County of Stolberg

From 1210 a count Heinrich I zu Stolberg is documented, who was mentioned as Count Heinrich von Voigtsted as early as 1200 . The family seat in Stolberg was built by Count Heinrich von Honstein , possibly his father, from 1201 .

In 1549, Schwarza , which had previously belonged to the Henneberg County, came into the possession of the Stolberg Counts. In 1710, the Stolberg-Schwarza dominion was created through the division of inheritance .

Heinrich August remained without male descendants and Stolberg-Schwarza fell to the Stolberg-Gedern line.

Stolberg-Wernigerode

In 1429 the County of Wernigerode came to the Counts of Stolberg through an inheritance contract. The division of 1645 resulted in the older line, called Stolberg-Wernigerode from 1710.

By the recess of July 19, 1714, the county fell through mediation to the Kingdom of Prussia .

Reign of Gedern

The rule of Gedern fell to the Counts of Stolberg in 1535, after the male line of the ruling family had died out. From 1677 onwards, the Stolberg-Gedern line was created, the counts of which were elevated to the rank of prince in 1742.

In 1804 the Stolberg-Gedern line died out in the male line and the area fell back to the Count's main line Stolberg-Wernigerode.

County of Koenigstein

On May 25, 1535, with the death of Eberhard IV, the lords of Eppstein died out in the male line. The County of Königstein , which they owned , fell to Stolberg through the marriage of Anna von Eppstein-Königstein to Count Friedrich Botho zu Stolberg-Roßla. Their son Ludwig lived with Eberhard from 1515.

After the death of Christoph zu Stolberg, the county of Königstein was annexed by Kurmainz .

Reign of Ortenberg

The Ortenberg office was a condominium owned by the Lords of Hanau , Eppstein and Isenburg . Since the Stolberg family inherited the Eppstein family, Ortenberg fell to the Stolberg family after the real division in 1601.

Ruler:

Heinrich Volrad's daughter, Countess Anna Elisabeth zu Stolberg-Ortenberg , married Heinrich Ernst I. zu Stolberg-Wernigerode. Their son founded the Stolberg-Gedern line. The Ortenberg office fell on the Stolberg-Gedern line.
