essentially around 1500 The castle, which shaped the landscape of the Mulden valley near Grimma, was demolished in 1971, its significance in terms of local history, architectural history and cultural history as well as urban planning (characterizing the townscape).

The site of the ancient manor Döben lies on a spur-like rock plateau high above the Mulde , once the buildings of the picturesque castle complex towered up here, clearly visible from afar. These were blown up and removed in 1971, the basement and foundations were preserved. The farmyard was arranged on the southwest side, facing the town. Only remnants (mostly fragmentary) of his extensive buildings have survived. Döben was founded as a burgrave's seat in the 10th century. In the 15th century, it was converted into a manor. Over the centuries changes and renovations of the buildings. The castle was almost completely rebuilt after the fire in 1857 (planning by Ernst Moritz Haenel). As a result of the extensive demolition and destruction after the Second World War, only the site and a few structural evidence of the manor complex, which was once inextricably linked to the history of the town of Döben, are now evidence. These form the heritage-relevant entity of the Döben manor. The reconstructed building of the former brewery from the 16th century and the garden pavilion from the middle of the 18th century are the most valuable parts of this entity and are therefore identified as individual monuments. See the corresponding list entry. The basement and foundation walls of the castle and various former farm buildings as well as the fencing, gate and paving of the manor complex are recorded as totality parts without individual monument value, but which are of essential importance for the appearance and the testimony value of the totality. There are also pools on the estate and a bridge that crosses them.

The former manor Döben as a whole embodies various monument-relevant values. Despite its heavy losses, it is an important document of the local history, because for a long time it was the defining part of the place alongside the church, churchyard and rectory. In addition, it is a testimony to the aristocratic culture in Saxony and, in its rudimentary parts, also refers to the structural and functional structure of a Saxon manor complex. This is where its cultural and historical significance lies. Due to its interweaving with the landscape and the local structure, the manor area is also important for the appearance of the place, so that it is also of urban value. (LfD / 2012)

History: Formerly an important castle complex with numerous buildings, origins probably as early as the 10th or 11th century, parts verifiably from the 14th century, thorough renovation in the 17th century (von Schönfeld family) in the style of a Renaissance castle, further renovation after fire in 1857 Carl Moritz Haenel , slight war damage 1945, blown up by resolution of the SED in 1950 (later blown up and demolitions, most recently in 1972).

The historic gardens of the formerly densely built-up palace complex were limited to parts of the northeast (pleasure garden) and southeast (kitchen garden).

  • Northeastern Pleasure Garden:
    • Enclosure: (quarry stone wall, partially plastered, with cover made of porphyry tufa stone), porphyry tufa portal from the southwest, two historical boundary stones.
    • Garden pavilion on the northern edge of the slope (renovated) with a view over the Mulde, flanked to the west by a semicircular cantilever viewing area with ornamental grille and natural stone polygonal paving.
    • Vegetation: East of the pavilion two linden trees (old trees)
    • Lawn, curved path between the portal and the pavilion (water-bound ceiling, yellowish), two stone benches (porphyry tuff, profiled), two tombstones (added), a salvaged fountain bowl (porphyry tufa) at the original location (renovated, not in use). Framing shrubs and roses, side exit to the east. Adjacent former brewery (restored).
  • South-eastern garden, presumably primarily gardening or kitchen garden:
    • Terracing (quarry stone retaining walls), formerly a greenhouse or orangery (demolition of the terrain).
    • Separate access from the forecourt to the northeast, brick pylons (brick, plastered) with porphyry tufa cover.
    • Courtyard area with historical field stone paving, lime trees (old trees) in the transition to the former north-western courtyard area.

Comment: The loss of the historical building stock makes handling the foundations and cellars a task of gardening and monument maintenance.

1548 Brewery in the core Renaissance building, pretty baroque garden pavilion with mansard roof, importance for local and architectural history.

Former brewery building, 1548, one-storey building in broken and brick masonry with an obtuse-angled floor plan, also an obtuse-angled two-storey head building with roof turrets, developed hipped roofs, profoundly rebuilt after destruction and fires, on the courtyard side Rochelle, some arched windows in Rochlitz Porphyry tufa partly with bar profiles, others in sandstone, inside groin vaults. Garden pavilion, built in the middle of the 18th century, single-storey building with a square floor plan, plastered masonry, mansard roof, window and door frames in Rochlitz porphyry tuff and sandstone. The buildings are one of the few, largely authentic, architectural testimonies of the former Döben palace complex, whose history dates back to the 10th century. While the brewery building was reconstructed based on its historical form while retaining the valuable substance, the baroque garden pavilion has survived the fateful course of the palace complex to this day largely unchanged. Both objects embody an important informative and memorable value about the history of the former manor Döben, which emerged from a burgrave seat and once had a remarkable castle complex. For these reasons, they are important in terms of local history. As typical buildings in the existing manor complex, they are also of architectural importance.
