There are 14 landscape protection areas in the city of Ulm. The oldest area in Ulm is the Tobel landscape protection area (formerly the Blue Valley) established in 1954 .

The landscape protection area comprises the large forest areas northeast of the Ulm-Stuttgart railway line, the open landscape in the areas of Ober- and Unterhaslach and three smaller parts of the landscape in the 'Füssleshau', 'Kleiner Gehrn' and 'Letten' areas. The large, intensively agriculturally used areas immediately around the Jungingen district are excluded from landscape protection.
