There are two nature reserves in Vienna , one of which is also part of a national park and the total area is around 4,500  ha .

Official definition of nature reserves

The Vienna Nature Conservation Act defines nature reserves as:

“Areas that

1. are characterized by a largely intact landscape budget,
2. rich in rare or endangered native animal or plant species are, in particular those of Annex II of Directive 92/43 / EEC of the Council of 21 May 1992 (OJ. no. L 206 et seq of 22 July 1992, p.7) in the version 97/62 / EC of the Council of October 27, 1997 (OJ No. L 305 of November 8, 1997, p. 42 ff) as well as for bird species in Appendix I of Directive 79/409 / EEC of April 2 1979 (OJ No. L 103 of 25 April 1979, p. 1 ff) in the version 97/49 / EC of 29 July 1997 (OJ No. L 223 of 13 August 1997, p. 9 ff) ,
3. accommodate special communities of plants or animals,
4. rich in natural monuments or
5. are worthy of preservation for other ecological or scientific reasons, can be declared a nature reserve by ordinance of the state government for their protection and maintenance . "

In principle, any interference with nature is prohibited in the nature reserve. In the ordinance of a nature reserve, uses can be permitted, provided that the preservation of the originality, the plant and animal species, the habitats, the natural monuments and the ecological characteristics of this area are not significantly impaired. In addition, the nature conservation authority can authorize individual interventions in nature by means of a notification if these do not significantly impair the protection purpose.
