List of weather disasters of 2018 with a loss of more than one billion US dollars
This list of weather disasters of 2018 with a loss of more than one billion US dollars names 39 natural disasters for which the international insurance consultancy Aon Benfield has determined a loss of more than one billion US dollars and where the weather was the cause of the damage. This is the fourth highest number since these constellations began in 1990; On average, 25 natural disasters occurred annually during this period, causing damage of more than one billion US dollars. Out of 39 weather disasters, seven are drought- related , more than ever, and six are forest fires . Seven were severe weather events such as hail , tornado and storm (excluding tropical cyclones), three are floods after extensive rainfall and eight are the consequences of tropical cyclones. There are also four onset of winter and cold waves. According to these calculations, the total economic damage of all 394 significant natural disasters from 2018 amounts to 225 billion US dollars, and it is 33% above the average from 1980 to 2017. Most of that - 215 billion US dollars - was caused by weather disasters , significantly less than the previous high of $ 344 billion in 2005.
Sixteen of these weather disasters occurred in the United States , seven in the People's Republic of China , and five in Europe.
The number of people killed in natural disasters was around 10,300 in 2018, significantly lower than the long-term average (2000-2018) of 64,600 deaths. The weather disaster with the most direct deaths was the 2018 monsoon floods in India, which killed 1,424 people, including more than 500 in the state of Kerala alone .
