List of weather disasters of 2016 with a loss of more than one billion US dollars

This list of weather disasters from 2016 with a loss of more than one billion US dollars names 30  natural disasters for which the international insurance consultancy Aon Benfield has determined a loss of more than one billion US dollars and for which the weather was the cause of the damage. Of these 30 natural events, nine are severe weather events such as hail , tornado and storm (excluding tropical cyclones), six are floods after extensive rainfall and six are the consequences of tropical cyclones. There are also two onset of winter and five droughts. According to these calculations, the total economic damage of all natural disasters in 2016 amounts to 210 billion US dollars, which is 21% above the average of the last sixteen years.

Fourteen of these weather disasters affected the United States and seven that of the People's Republic of China . Two events occurred in Europe.

The American meteorologist Jeff Masters named in his blog - after the fact that 2016 was the world's warmest year in measurement history - the smog events in Delhi at the beginning of November (The Great Smog of Delhi) and in some areas of northern China in mid-December as the worst weather-related damage .
