The flood in Paris, June 3rd

From May 28, low pressure areas , known in Germany as Elvira , Friederike and Gisela or “Tief Mitteleuropa”, resulted in severe storms with heavy rain and lightning strikes, floods , flash floods , mudslides , gusts of wind, hail and tornadoes . Extreme weather events and floods also occurred in other European countries , for example in Paris and London . Scientists believe that such extreme rainfall has increased due to climate change and is very likely - especially in Europe - to continue to increase.

Dead and injured

The storm resulted in the death of four people on May 29. In Schwäbisch Gmünd , a firefighter tried to save a person, but was sucked into a sewer with him. In Weissbach , a man died in a flooded underground car park . In Schorndorf a 13-year-old girl was hit by a train and killed after it had fled from the heavy rain under a railway bridge.

In Mendig in the Vulkaneifel , the Rock am Ring rock festival was canceled by the authorities on June 5th after heavy rain and over 80 people injured by lightning strikes when further thunderstorms approached.
