With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops in 1794, the rule of Kurtrier ended , from 1798 to 1814 Moselkern belonged to the canton of Münstermaifeld . In 1815 the place was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Moselkern wool factory

Wool factory and villa in Moselkern

In 1813, the C. Haan & Sons blanket and flannel factory was founded on the site of an old Lohmühle on the Elz. In 1892 the owners built a representative manufacturer's villa. The wool factory operated well into the 20th century and finally went bankrupt in 1993. Since 2012, a support association has been trying to fill the listed building with cultural life.

coat of arms

The municipality has had the following coat of arms since 1982 :

Moselkern coat of arms
Blazon : "In black a silver wave-shaped drawbar, above a red armored and tongued golden lion head, in front a golden gravestone, behind a golden miter."
Justification of the coat of arms: The wave-shaped drawbar indicates the confluence of the Elz and the Moselle, where the town of Moselkern is located. The tombstone is an image of the Merovingian stone excavated around 1800 from the 7th century, one of the earliest monumental Christian representations in the West. To the patron saint, St. Bishop Valerius recalls the miter. His portrait is on the court and jury's seal from 1562 and 1765.

education

The children attend primary school in Müden. Secondary schools are located in Treis-Karden, Cochem, Münstermaifeld and Koblenz.

Attractions

Merovingian Cross
  • In the immediate vicinity of the village is Eltz Castle ( Wierschem district ).
  • The Moselkern town hall from 1535 is the oldest town hall on the Moselle, which is (again) used as a town hall. In its almost five hundred year history it also served as a school. In 1909 a small monastery with a daycare center was established in the building, which lasted until 1969. Since 2002 the building has been used as a town hall again. A small curiosity is the metal ring set in the ground floor, to which criminals were tied up until the French Revolution and exposed to the ridicule of the villagers.
  • A replica of the so-called Merovingian Cross from Moselkern from the 7th century found in Moselkern in 1915 is on the forecourt of St. Valerius Church. It is considered the oldest representation of the crucified Christ in monumental art north of the Alps. The original is in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn.
