Schmitt is a municipality in the Cochem-Zell district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Ulmen community and is located in the southern Eifel .

history

The place name Schmitt is derived from the old job title blacksmith . In the period before 1750 there was significant iron ore mining in the greater southern Eifel region . The rivers and streams supplied the necessary water power for the bellows of the forges. The forests of the Eifel provided the necessary firewood.

With the occupation of the Left Bank of the Rhine in 1794 by French revolutionary troops , the place was assigned to French and in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna to the Kingdom of Prussia . Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .
