Beilstein is a municipality in the Cochem-Zell district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Cochem and is located directly on the right bank of the Moselle .

history

Franconian grave finds show Beilstein's settlement around 800 AD. Since 1268 the place was fiefdom of the Lords of Braunshorn . Under Johann von Braunshorn (1299-1346), Beilstein received city privileges from King Heinrich VII in 1309 and was fortified. A Jewish community has been documented since 1309, and its Jewish cemetery above the castle still exists today. In 1310 the former parish church was donated. After the von Braunshorn family died out, the fiefdom passed to the von Winneburg family in 1360 . After Kurtrier took possession of Beilstein in 1488, it was enfeoffed by the Counts of Metternich with the rule of Winneburg and Beilstein in 1652 . In 1689, Metternich Castle (“The proud walls”) was destroyed by French troops. A Carmelite monastery was founded in 1636 (abolished in 1803), and in 1691 the foundation stone of the Carmelite monastery church, which was completed in 1783, was laid. The site was created in the 17th and 18th centuries and has largely been preserved to this day. The rule of the Counts of Metternich ended in 1794 with the occupation by the French revolutionary troops . From 1798 to 1814 the place belonged to the canton of Zell in the Rhein-Mosel-Département and was the capital of a Mairie . In 1815 the place was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna and belonged to the Senheim mayor in the Zell district . Since 1946 it has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Attractions

The small settlement has one of the best preserved historical sites on the Moselle and is therefore also known as the miniature Rothenburg or 'Sleeping Beauty of the Moselle'. The village, which despite its small size has an urban character, is dominated by the ruins of Metternich Castle , which once belonged to the dynasty of the same name .

The place is a place of pilgrimage, as the "Wonderful Black Madonna " is placed there in the baroque monastery church of St. Joseph . It is a statue of Spanish origin from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century. In 1620 the Spaniards conquered the place in the Thirty Years War . They brought the sculpture with them from their homeland and left the Black Madonna to the Beilsteiners at the end of their fourteen-year rule. After the Carmelite Fathers moved into the monastery again in 1948, the miraculous image of the Black Madonna, which had meanwhile reached the Diocesan Museum in Trier , was brought back to the Beilsteiner church in a solemn procession in 1950 , with great sympathy from the population.

The organ in the monastery church is the work of the organ builder Balthasar König from Münstereifel / Cologne from the year 1738. A restoration in 2002 gave the instrument back its original sound or disposition.

Every year in July and August, the “Beilsteiner Märchensommer” is held , at which the marionette theater from Cochem in the wine museum performs fairy tales. At the start and end of the series of events, Grimm's “ Sleeping Beauty ” is always performed in a traditional version on the peep-show stage, which is one of the reasons why Beilstein is called the Sleeping Beauty of the Moselle .
