Lyachavichy is a small town in Belarus . The population was 10,873 in 2015.

location

Ljachawitschy located about 21 kilometers southeast of Baranovichi at the Vedz'ma, a tributary of the Shchara that in the Memel empties, in the east of Brest Region and is the capital of Rajons Ljachawitschy . The railway line from Baranavichy to Sarny in the Ukraine runs through the town .

history

The place was given to the Lithuanian nobleman Jan Hieronimowicz Chodkiewicz in 1572 by the Polish King and Lithuanian Grand Duke Sigismund II . The fortress in Lyachawitschy, built under the Lithuanian Grand Hetman Jan Karol Chodkiewicz , was nicknamed "Lithuanian Jasna Góra ". The fortress was destroyed in the Great Northern War in 1706. In the Second Partition of Poland , the city came to the Russian Empire in 1793 . Ljachawitschy was ceded to Poland in 1921 and was named Lachowicze . In 1939 it was annexed by the Soviet Union and incorporated into the Belarusian SSR. In 1941 the city was occupied by the German Reich, under whose rule a ghetto was set up, but was recaptured by the Soviet Union in July 1944. Since then, the city has been part of the Belarusian SSR and, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Belarus.

Attractions

The Catholic Church was built in 1602 and rebuilt in the third quarter of the 18th century under the hetman Michał Massalski . It changed denominations several times and was used as a hospital after the Second World War.
