Luninez or ( Belarusian Лунінец , Russian Лунинец , Polish Łuniniec ) is a city in the Republic of Belarus in the Breszkaja Woblasz with around 24,000 inhabitants. The city is an administrative center of the Luninez district near the Pripyat and is an important railway junction in the western part of the country. The regional newspaper Lunineckija nawiny is published in Luninez .

The city is located in the south of the country in the Polesia region east of the city of Pinsk . The border with Ukraine runs around 60 km south .
history
Luninez is first mentioned in historical sources in 1449 as a village with the name Maly Lulin . At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries The 19th century became an important rail hub in the region. From 1921 to 1939 Luninez belonged to Poland and was the capital of the Powiat Łuniniec in the Polesian Voivodeship . During the Second World War, the entire region was under German occupation from 1941 to 1944.
economy
In addition to its importance as a traffic hub, Luninez is the location of the electronics factory "Polesseelektromasch", a clockworks, a factory for dairy products ( Luninezki malotschny sawod ), the forestry Luninecles and a wood-processing combine.

Luninez is located at the crossroads of the main Brest - Homel and Vilnius - Rivne lines . It is also on the main road from Brest to Gomel.

Luninez has had a town partnership with Schenefeld ( Schleswig-Holstein ) since October 8, 2001 .
