Early history

Excavation finds were recovered from the Neolithic and Mesolithic times. The settlement of Llanmaes at the beginning of the Iron Age (800-600 BC ) has also been proven by finds. For centuries during the Iron Age, residents used to eat pork at ceremonial gatherings, which came exclusively from the right foreleg, even though pork was not the generally preferred meat. "These celebrations may have represented a time of solidarity when people came together, just as their fathers and the fathers of their fathers did," says Dr. Richard Madgwick of Cardiff from the National Museum of Wales, which houses archaeological finds from Llanmaes.

Roman times

A Roman fort , of which remains can still be seen, was located on the outskirts of Llanmaes.

middle Ages

In the Middle Ages , around 1234, the current St. Cattwg Church was built. The church is named after St. Cadoc (also "Cadog", in medieval Latin "Cadocus", in Welsh "Cattwg"), a Celtic saint of the sixth century. It is believed that a Celtic church existed in Llanmaes as early as the 5th or 6th century . The first written mention was in 1254. In the later centuries extensive reconstructions took place. The tower was built in 1632. The interior of the church contains a Norman, chiseled baptismal font with a decorated edge, probably from the 12th century . The lower part of the rood screen is of Victorian origin, but the upper part is from the late Middle Ages and includes part of the original rood screen from the 15th century . Remnants of a medieval wall painting can be found on the north wall of the church, which the Courtauld Institute of Art considers to be a preformational representation of St. George and the dragon, the princess and her parents.

The Malefant Castle is a monument consisting of the remains of a medieval fortified mansion, or a castle, of the De Malefant family. It is located at the southern entrance to the town, on a gentle, south-west facing slope, 50 m above sea level, with a view of Llanmaes Brook and consists of the destroyed rectangular masonry tower made of Blue Lias limestone with external dimensions 14.4 m by 8 , 4 m. The fortification was used for defense in the late Middle Ages.

present

In 1879 Illtyd Buller Pole-Evans , who would later become a botanist and Africa explorer, was born in the town.

Today Llanmaes is a town of around 50 houses and 400 people who make a living from agriculture, tourism on the Bristol Channel coast and jobs in the area. Near Llanmaes (2.6 km) is the St. Athan's Airport (ICAO: EGDX; IATA: DGX) of the British Ministry of Defense. It was the designated location for the UK's new Defense Academy, which promised jobs for the region. However, the program was canceled on October 19, 2010. Ground staff engineers are trained on the site. DGX Athan is the base of the 4th School of Technical Training , which serves the personnel training of all three military departments and the civilian personnel of the Ministry of Defense. The University of Wales Volunteer Reserve Air Force is also located here .

The village has won the competition for the most well-kept village in the Vale of Glamorgan eight times (1973, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2008 and 2009). In 1997 it also won the National Village of the Year (Community Life category) award.

The only remaining restaurant is opposite the forge and is called "The Blacksmiths Arms".
