The Rotes Moor trail center ( called the Schwabenhimmel trail until 2002 ) is a cross-country skiing area in the Hessian part of the Rhön near Gersfeld . The winter sports area is located on the western slope of the Heidelstein , which is 925.7 meters above sea level , between it and the Red Moor . The cross-country ski center has been certified as a Nordic Active Center by the German Ski Association (DSV) since 2006 . With 1500 to 2000 visitors every day on beautiful winter days, it is one of the most popular cross-country skiing areas in Germany. The cross-country center includes several trails with different lengths and degrees of difficulty at heights of 805 to 882 meters. All trails are groomed for the classic style (parallel ski guidance) and the skating style if the snow conditions allow . Due to the altitude, there are sometimes over 100 days of snow a year; This makes the cross-country ski center one of the most snow-sure in central and northern Germany.

description

In the cross-country ski center, which is also connected to a small biathlon facility, several competitions take place every winter. Cross-country and biathlon competitions (Hessian Forest Ski Championships and a team biathlon sprint) are held. In 2003 the German Nordic Senior Championships were held in the cross-country ski center. The biathlon stand at 833 meters above sea level was built in 1982 to host the European Forestry Ski Championships and was used until 1987. In 1999 it was reactivated and the security wall was renewed. The cross-country ski center has several entry points. The main entrance is at the Moordorf car park, right by the house on the Roten Moor at 823 meters above sea level. There are other ways to get into the network of trails from the Schwedenwall car park, from the parking lots on the Wasserkuppe via the Alte Reichsstraße access trail , from the Holzberg car park and from the Schornhecke car park .

history

In 1997, cross-country skiing was only possible to a limited extent in the Heidelstein area, as the routes were too narrow and overgrown by spruce trees . The cross-country trails were groomed with a technically obsolete trail device by employees of the city of Gersfeld after clearing the streets. It was only possible to ski in parallel tracks on the trails. In 1998 Hessen Forst began to cut the routes free in order to improve the snowfall. In 1999, large equipment was used to widen the routes and remove root stocks. In the winter of 1999/2000 there were over 100 continuous snow days in the cross-country ski center. The district of Fulda, managed in 2002 a new track setter on, in which the track plates can be lifted alternately and has a hydraulic cutter. For the first time, the trails could also be prepared for free technique. In the same year the trail area was renamed the Rotes Moor trail center .

In July 2004 the house on the Roten Moor was inaugurated as a joint project by NABU , the district of Fulda, SKG Gersfeld and the city of Gersfeld. Due to the well-groomed trails for both styles, the number of visitors kept increasing. In 2005, the house on the Roten Moor was integrated into the cross-country ski runs by clearing an additional route through the forest. In winter 2005/2006 the cross-country ski center recorded a record number of snowy days. The trails could be used continuously on 135 days from November 21, 2005 to April 4, 2006. In June 2006, Wolfgang Kemmerzell, chairman of SKG Gersfeld, Nordic department, founded Loipenpark.de as owner and managing director. On August 27, 2006, the cross-country ski center was inaugurated by the national trainer of the German cross-country skiing team, Jochen Behle , as the Nordic Active Center Gersfeld . Behle already knew the trail from his youth, when he took part in Hessian competitions and as a former regional trainer. The project was implemented by the German Sport University Cologne on the part of the DSV . At that time, the cross-country ski center was the 13th in Germany. The winter of 2006/2007 was poor in snow in the Rhön and there were only 47 usable days of snow. In addition, there was a wind break from Hurricane Kyrill , which blocked the routes. Not a single competition took place this winter.

House on the Red Moor (2009)

The winter of 2007/2008 from November 10th 2007 offered good conditions for cross-country skiing with half a meter of snow. The snow lasted until January 10, 2008; so the only cross-country skiing competitions could be held there in the Hessian region. There was another three weeks of snow over Mardi Gras and Easter, so that the cross-country ski center was able to record a total of 77 snow days. From January 2008 Loipenpark.de made Germany's first privately financed cross-country ski trail report available on the Internet. The cross-country ski trail report was further improved with the commissioning of a webcam in winter 2008/2009. In winter 2008/2009, after winter 2005/2006, there was again a winter of the century with 134 usable days of snow. The snow lay continuously from November 23, 2008 to April 5, 2009. With many days of snow and snow depths of up to 1.10 meters, there were consistently good cross-country skiing conditions in the cross-country ski center. In winter 2009/2010 there were a total of 88 days of snow between December 12, 2009 and March 21, 2010. In 2010, the Hessian and West German championships were also held with around 200 participants.

On August 22, 2011, the NaBu-Haus was connected to the public power grid by the Fulda district via the Heidelstein transmitter . Since summer 2012 the routes can be found at GPSies.com . In addition, the Moordorf car park was expanded and, in October the following year, two parking ticket machines became the first chargeable car park in the Fulda district in the Hochrhön. In the following year, in addition to the parking fee, a voluntary fee for the maintenance of the trails was introduced, as well as an annual car vigniette (parking and trail fee).

Trails

The cross-country ski center comprises several cross-country trails, some of which use the same routes or are connected to each other and form a nested circuit. The Nordic Active Center has three trails that are certified by the DSV. The level of difficulty ranges from easy to medium to difficult. In addition, the cross-country skiing center operates five other cross-country trails suitable for competitions, some of which also use the same routes with lengths of 2.7 to 10 kilometers. Combined, longer distances can also be run. The level of difficulty also ranges from easy to difficult. The cross -country trails certified by the DSV are called easy Förstina trail , intermediate Förstina trail and difficult Förstina trail . The entrance is at the house on the Roten Moor at the Moordorf car park. The cross-country trails are in hilly terrain with inclines and declines of less than three percent. However, the individual routes also have several inclines over ten and inclines of up to 6.8 percent.

  • Easy Förstina trail: the trail has a total length of 4.0 kilometers with a height difference of 50 meters (817 to 867 meters above sea level). The total ascent is 71 meters with two gradients of 6.5 and 4.4 percent.
  • Moderately difficult Förstina trail: the total length is 6.3 kilometers, the difference in altitude 57 meters (810 to 867 meters above sea level), the total ascent 111 meters with three gradients of 6.5, 4.5 and 3.9 percent.
  • Difficult Förstina trail: the trail has a total length of 8.6 kilometers with a height difference of 77 meters (805 to 882 meters above sea level). The total ascent is 179 meters with five inclines, with the two steepest sections having inclines of 10.0 and 10.5 percent. From the highest point of the route, a descent of over a kilometer with an average gradient of 5.2 percent leads to the lowest point.
