Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers were a Dutch rock 'n' roll band from Arnhem .
biography
In the mid-1960s the band The Moans , named after a song by Art Blakey , was founded by Arnhem art academy students. Founding members were the pianist Herman Brood , the guitarists Erlend Josephy, Jos Hesseling and Alfons Haket, as well as the drummer Alan Macfarlane. After Herman Brood continued his career with Cuby and the Blizzards , the band existed until 1973 with a changing line-up, including Jan Rietman on piano and Moan .
In 1968 Arnie Treffers ("Long Tall Ernie") joined the band, who played with McFarlane from 1971 and from 1973 with Henk Bruysten in the band Arnhem . In 1972 Moan first appeared as Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers . At first it was more of a joke when the band, who played more progressive rock , dressed as rockers after the break and played rock 'n' roll as Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers .
From 1973, however, the band only appeared under the new name. Rein Muntinga, a drummer who had worked with Arnie Treffers in the band Spijkerkwartet , took over the management of Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers and presented them as a pure rock 'n' roll band with a sophisticated advertising campaign. Rumors of aggressive and criminal band members and a wild stage show did the rest. The Shakers became part of the first wave of the rock 'n' roll revival and had first hits like Big Fat Mama , Get Yourself Together and Allright . TV appearances and concerts in Germany followed.
In 1974 Arnie Treffers released solo records as Arnie . In the same year Jan Rietman and Henk Bruysten, Alfons Haket in 1976 and Alan Macfarlane in 1978 left the band. Rietmann worked with Bonnie St. Claire in the band Unit Gloria and ran the solo project The Killer . Bruysten founded Hank the Knife and the Jets , where Alfons Haket and Alan Macfarlane also played for a time.
Jos Jaspers (guitar, 1976 to 1977), Eugene Arts (drums, 1978), Tony Britnell (previously saxophonist for Shakin 'Stevens & the Sunsets ), Karl Buskohl (guitar), Ruud van Buuren (bass) (from Livin 'Blues ) and Jan Pijnenburg (drums) (from Lucifer and Sweet d'Buster ). Other musicians were Robby Verweij (bass) and Fred Brouwer (guitar).
The single Allright (Makin 'Love in the Middle of the Night) was in the Dutch charts for 6 weeks and reached number 9. Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers' greatest success was the single Do You Remember in 1977. The title was 4 weeks at number 1 in the Belgian and Dutch single charts. In Germany, the title was in the charts for 12 weeks and rose to number 20. On September 3, 1977, Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers opened the First Rider Open Air in Scheeßel . They appeared several times on the television show disco and in the music store . For contractual reasons, the band appeared under the name The Block in 1980/81 and released a single in Germany.
In 1982 the band broke up for good. Jaspers and Arts formed the band Turbo . Jan Pijnenburg went to Doe Maar . Karl Buskohl was successful as Carl Carlton . Arnie Treffers died on 25 August 1995 at the age of 48 years in Groningen to lung cancer .
On March 31, 2012 The Shakers performed again in the line-up with Alfons Haket, Jan Rietman, Alan Macfarlane and Henk Bruysten at the Luxor in Arnhem. This commemorates Arnie Treffers, who would have turned 65 on February 15th of that year.
