Doe Maar

Henny Vrienten

Doe Maar (from 1978 to 1984 and from 1999 to 2000 and from 2008 to today) are a Dutch pop group that sings in Dutch and combines elements of ska , punk and reggae to nederpop .

Doe Maar's four studio albums since Skunk all hit number 1 in the Dutch album charts, and seven different compilations have hit the charts over the years . This makes Doe Maar the most commercially successful Dutch-speaking group.

Band members

Ernst Jansz

The best-known Doe Maar formation consisted of Henny Vrienten (1948): vocals and bass guitar; Ernst Jansz (1948): Singing and keyboard instruments; Jan Hendriks (1949): guitar and vocals; Jan Pijnenburg (1955): drums and vocals. This is the group that featured on the posters and in pop magazines, although drummer Jan Pijnenburg only appeared on the live records of the 1980s and on the 2000 reunion album.

The first line-up from June 1978 included Ernst Jansz, Jan Hendriks, Carel Copier on drums and Piet Dekker with vocals and bass. Joost Belinfante (formerly with CCC Inc. and the Slumberlandband ) played the bass guitar from February to August 1980 until he was replaced by Henny Vrienten. During the recordings for the album Doris Day en Other Stukken in November and December 1981, Carel Copier was exchanged for René van Collem , the son of the late film critic Simon van Collem . In mid-May 1982 the band separated from him in favor of Jan Pijnenburg (previously with Sweet D'Buster, Fontessa, Lucifer, Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers and Hollander ). However, Pijnenburg dropped out as a drummer after the first appearance due to a car accident until January 1983, which is why Van Collem was brought back. The line-up of Vrienten-Jansz-Hendriks-Pijnenburg remained until the farewell concert on April 14, 1984 and for all subsequent joint performances.

history

founding

Jan Hendriks

The reason for the establishment of Doe Maar in 1978 was the Festival of Fools . Ernst Jansz was asked if he could put a band together and tried out pop music with Dutch lyrics together with Piet Dekker (both ex-Slumberlandband and The Rumbones ). Guitarist Jan Hendriks and drummer Carel Copier were poached from the band Steam . From April up to and including June 1978 the group was expanded to include the clowns Mart de Corte and Jan Bogaerts (later known as the photographer), the singer Wim van Oevelen (who later became the tour manager of Doe Maar) and the singers Anouk Strijbosch and Truus de Groot ( later Nasmak ). After a contribution to the LP Uitholling Overdwars in April 1979 with the title Blozen , manager Frank van der Meijden signed a record deal with Telstar, the label of hit king Johnny Hoes . At the end of 1979 this resulted in the first LP Doe Maar . The single Ik zou het willen doen came into the Tipparade in February 1980 .

Henny Vrienten joins them

Due to problems in the collaboration between Ernst Jansz and Piet Dekker, the group decided to stop. But in order to be able to fulfill the last contractual obligations, they were still looking for a bass guitarist. Jansz approached the professional bassist, guitarist and composer Henny Vrienten, with whom he had already played several times: first in 1975 on the album Waar ik woon en wie ik ben by Boudewijn de Groot and in his accompanying band on the corresponding tour. Then Jansz and Vrienten (at that time still on the guitar) formed the reggae band The Rumbones in 1977 with bassist Piet Dekker and drummer Johnny Lodewijks . On the 1980 album Van een afstand by Boudewijn de Groot, Vrienten, Jansz, Hendriks and Copier also played.

Initially, Vrienten was reluctant to work at Doe Maar, fearing that his own career could suffer as a result. Vrienten gave in because Doe Maar seemed to be a band where fun played an important role. With him and Ernst Jansz, the band suddenly had two gifted songwriters who had a positive influence on each other. The band decided to take the party numbers out of their repertoire and only play ska and reggae. Vrienten immediately contributed three tracks to the new album that the group was busy with at the moment.

Accidentally on the radio - the breakthrough

The record distribution company was not impressed by the leap in quality and postponed the release of the album Skunk , initially until the end of the Christmas season and then waited for Carnival. The sales company was of the opinion that the work of the group would otherwise remain as a slow-moving between the albums of the better-known names.

Nevertheless, an advertising campaign for the album has already started, radio stations received advance editions of the single. Due to an oversight, the radio hosts had no idea that this record was not yet available. They played the single and the album was declared LP of the day. Listeners were immediately taken with the title 32 jaar . Since it seemed to be difficult to keep the original title Sinds 1 dag of 2 , the DJ Frits Spits , who set the tone at the time, gave the song its current title.

The definitive breakthrough came in 1982 with the single Doris Day and the melancholy reggae album Doris Day En Other Stukken . From the album Henny Vrienten mixed a Dubversion ( Doe De Dub Discodubversie ) and 12 "versions of the titles Is Dit Alles and situatie .

In May 1982 Doe Maar received the Zilveren Harp , the Stichting Conamus' prestigious motivational award for new talent. Jansz, Hendriks, van Collem and Belinfante also appeared ten times with Bram Vermeulen under the name De Gevestigde Orde . On May 31, 1982, Doe Maar opened the Pinkpop music festival . On October 8th there was a television appearance on Veronica's Popnacht with Normaal , Golden Earring and Vitesse .

Peak of popularity

When the single De Bom was released in November 1982 (5 weeks at number 1: from December 4, 1982 to January 8, 1983) Doe Maar had mutated into a so-called supergroup, with corresponding attention from the media and the associated merchandising . The group became hysterical. The faces of the band members had become an indispensable part of the magazine titles, the merchandising was not exactly slow and the older works of the group also went like warm rolls over the counter. Doe Maar became the most popular band the nederpop has ever known. Within a few months, half the country was looking phosphor green and candy pink.

The band was less well known in Belgium, so Doe Maar performed there three times in January 1983. In the Netherlands, the album Skunk held number 1 position in the album hit lists in January 1983, almost two years after its release. The album 4us (pronounced like the English virus in Dutch ) was released in March 1983 as LP, MC and - as the first Dutch-language record - also as CD . Already in advance sales, the work reached platinum and number 1 position, as did the single Pa , which entered the national charts as the first single to go straight from 0 to 1 . During this period, the band members Jansz en Vrienten appeared in the (gossip) press all the time, so they announced a release stop on March 30th.

On 16 and 17 May 1983 Doe Maar were in a charity project for the benefit of Amnesty International participated, titled Een Gebaar . During the two gala evenings in the Carré Amsterdam , Doe Maar played the musical accompaniment of Adèle Bloemendaal , Freek de Jonge and Van Kooten en De Bie for three tracks . On these evenings, Henny Vrienten accompanied André Hazes on guitar.

A week later, Doe Maar were the main act at Pinkpop . This gig in Geleen was supposed to be her climax, but nothing came of it. During the hour-long final performance, the band was thrown at, Henny Vrienten was hit hard on the jaw by an apple. For the last number, Doe Maar received support from Golden Earring members George Kooymans and Cesar Zuiderwijk, among others .
The appearances in Loosbroek , Goes , Assen , Tiel and Joure in June 1983 were recorded for the live double album Lijf Aan Lijf . After this album was mixed in September, Vrienten worked on his solo album Geen Ballade in October and November 1983 .

Official dissolution

In December there were gigs in the Netherlands Antilles , after which Doe Maar began recording the fifth studio album. The track Macho had already appeared as a single when it was decided on February 20, 1984 that Doe Maar quit. The band found it increasingly difficult to deal with the great success. They no longer wanted to see young girls faint in warm overcrowded halls, and they no longer wanted to accept the loss of their privacy. Precisely this aspect becomes clear in the title of the song Eén Nacht alleen and a verse from it:

Sylvia, Jeanette, Nathalie en Fien;
Elsje, Treesje, Truus, Babette, Betsie en Sabine;
Greet, Margreet, Marie, Marei en Angeline;
Mies, Marjan, Marjo, Marlyn en little Tine.

The breakup of the group in 1984 was first reported by the daily De Telegraaf on February 22nd, and that same evening even the generally reputable NOS evening news announced the news. On April 14, 1984, two farewell concerts were given at Maaspoort Sports en Events in 's-Hertogenbosch . The compilation 5 Jaar Doe Maar, Het Complete Overzicht with a new title kept the memory alive.

Continuation

In fact, the band members still enjoyed playing together and admitted to doing the same outside of the public eye. About 15 years later, on November 1, 1999, Doe Maar announced a one-time re- appearance (" Reünie "). It shouldn't remain a one-time event.

In 2000, the dream of many fans for a new album came true: Klaar ( Ready ), and an additional 16 appearances at Ahoy Rotterdam . The concerts had around 175,000 visitors; Doe Maar were thus the most successful band in 2000. A CD and a DVD of the concerts were released , both titled Hees van Ahoy .

Musical production

At the end of October 2005 reports appeared in the media that Doe Maar was in negotiations with V&V Entertainment about a possible theater production based on the band and their music. The musical Doe Maar! is designed in a similar way to the ABBA musical in that the music is the central theme and not the band members are in the foreground. Behind the scenes, the band members worked closely with the producers. Doe Maar! De popmusical premiered on January 28, 2007 in Tilburg . The musical won five of the fourteen prizes at the John Kraaijkamp Musical Awards on May 21, 2007, including the audience award. Pieter van de Waterbeemd (co-author of Pleidooi ) created the concept and wrote the connecting dialogues.

Reunie 2008

On November 27, 2007 it was announced that Doe Maar would give a concert on July 12, 2008 at De Kuip in Rotterdam . The concert was organized by One & Only Productions , which had also taken the initiative for the revival. The concert was sold out within an hour; it was then decided to organize an extra concert at De Kuip on July 10, 2008.

In addition to the concerts in the Netherlands, Doe Maar played at the Werchter Boutique Popfestival on July 13, 2008 in Belgium.

On May 6, 2008, four more appearances were announced for the end of June and July 1, 2008 in the form of try-out shows in Delft, Deventer, Tilburg and Amsterdam. Two of these four shows (Delft and Deventer) sold out within two minutes.

Henny Vrienten reported in an interview on June 20, 2008 that the following can be said about Doe Maar: “Dit is geen reünie, we bestaan weer!” (“This is not a Reunie, we're back!”) In the same interview It was also announced that Doe Maar, contrary to previous claims, will be working on a new studio album. It is not yet known when this album will be released.

Reünie 2012

In September 2012 the album Versies / Limmen Tapes was released , which was created in collaboration with Dutch rappers. Doe Maar's old hits were re-recorded, some of them in a rap version. Shortly thereafter, Doe Maar appeared at a concert in Amsterdam's Paradiso on behalf of War Child , for which the 1979 reggae title Hé Hé was specially rewritten. A few days later the group took part in the Symphonica in Rosso music event in Arnhem . Recordings of the concert were processed on the live album of the same name.

The record Doe de dub is a remix version by Doris Day and other stukken. Vrienten mixed them according to the dub principle, a Jamaican method of varying pieces of music. Known reggae hits are processed with large tapes by adding all kinds of effects such as echo and reverb. This usually removes some vocal parts. The instrumental result is often released on the singles' B-sides in Jamaica. Doe Maar also used this method, but the results also came to the LP. Despite the fact that 'Doe de dub' was released in limited numbers, it is one of the first dub records in the Netherlands and in any case the best known.

Trivia

  • The group Osdorp Posse makes several references to Doe Maar in their songs. On the album Vlijmscherp ( Messerscharf ) (1993) the band sings in the title Steek 'm Op ( Steck's an , lit): "dus wordt het saai / draai dan wat taai / en dan sein we zo high as een Vlaamse papegaai" (" when it gets boring / then do something tough / and then we get as high as a Flemish parrot ” ) - a reference to a similar line of text in the Doe Maar title Nederwiet (as much as Dutch weed / marijuana ). On the same album, Def P. imitates Henny Vienten's voice and reggae arrangements during the track Het Voorprogramma . In the title Carrière Maken of the album Afslag Osdorp (1995) Def P. refers to Henny Vriente's song Het is zo fijn er niet bij te horen ( “It's so good not to belong” ) in the lines: “En zoals onze Henny al liet horen: het is fijn om er niet bij te horen. ”The title ends with a delayed sample that repeats the line Carrière Maken from Doe Maar's number De Bom a few times. Vrienten also sang a duet with Def P. entitled Onkwetsbaarheid is Eenzaamheid on the album Geendagsvlieg ( Keintagsfliege , 1997). On this record Def P. also interpreted the title Sleur about the daily grind : “En als je weten weten wat dan real het geval is / luister dan nog eens naar Doe Maar met Is Dit Alles? "(" And if you want to know what's really going on, listen to Doe Maar with Is Dit Alles again "). On the album Harde Kernramp (2000) Def P sings: "Mmmm ... Ik heb het wel gezegd / 'k heb het wel gezegd /' k heb het wel gezegd" (" I said that "), a reference to the Doe Maar title Liever dan Lief , which was awarded gold .
  • Van Kooten en De Bie had Doe Maar appear on their TV show in the early 1980s. Disguised as Mayor of Juinen (a fictional place) and his deputy, the duo and Doe Maar performed a parody of the title Is Dit Alles? before: “Money is everything.” The refrain was: “Money is everything / leek Juinen financieel maar wat meer op Dallas ! / Money is everything. "
  • The Comité Recreatief Druggebruik (CRD) released a CD single of the occasional formation Zie Maar with an alternative version by Nederwiet at the end of 1999 , coincidentally just after the announcement of Doe Maar's reunion. The Utrecht DJ Red sang a text by Sacco Koster about the safe use of ecstasy under the title Pilletje of niet ( pill or not ) . “This is a song about een pil, een witte pil. Het gaat over de methyleendioxymethamfetamine. Oftewel… ecstasy. ”( This is a song about a pill, a white pill. It's about methylenedioxymethamphetamine . Or also… ecstasy. ). The original copywriter Joost Belinfante had given his approval for this project. The number was played in the dopeshow by Giel Beelen .
  • The band lived in a student dormitory in the center of Tilburg in 1979.
  • Henny Vrienten used a local parking garage to jam there .
