The Secret of the Alibrandis (Original title: Looking for Alibrandi ) is an Australian drama from 2000 . Directed by Kate Woods , the screenplay was written by Melina Marchetta based on her own novel.

Josie Alibrandi is about to graduate from school and has a difficult relationship with her single mother Christina. She also fell out with her Italian grandmother Katia, who often criticized Josie's absent father Michael. Josie's classmate Carly Bishop bullies her because of her parentage and describes her as a "bastard". Then Josie freaks out and breaks her nose with a book. Josie's father Michael, who has recently reappeared, helps her settle the matter. Then he befriends Josie and teaches her to drive.
She is less fortunate in love at first, as John Barton, with whom she is in love, commits suicide. Josie makes a new boyfriend, Jacob Coote, but doesn't want to have sex with him.
Grandmother Katia reveals to Josie that Christina's real father is not an Italian, but an Anglo-Saxon. For the sake of the family, Katia did not divorce her Italian husband. Josie persuades her grandmother to tell Christina as well - who later says that she already suspected it.
The film ends with a party attended by Josie, Jacob, Christina, Michael and Katia, among others.
Reviews
Luke Buckmaster wrote in In Film Australia on May 20, 2000 that the film shows a multicultural Australia. His second half of the film has a worse pace than the first, but the result is not bad overall ( "It's not a bad effort, even if the first half of Looking for Alibrandi demonstrates a good crackling pace and the second, a rather flattened pace" ) . The characters are not depicted flat.
Film-Dienst wrote, The secret of the Alibrandis is a "sensitive and humorous film about growing up" .
Awards
The film received five Australian Film Institute Awards in 2000 : for best film , for the screenplay, for portraying Pia Miranda and Greta Scacchi, and for editing. He was nominated for the same award in four other categories, including directing. Toby Oliver was nominated for an IF Award in 2000.
Melina Marchetta and Greta Scacchi received the 2001 Film Critics Circle of Australia Award . Six other nominations for the same award included those for Pia Miranda, Elena Cotta, Anthony LaPaglia, and Best Picture .

The film was shot in Sydney and a few other locations in New South Wales . He came into the Australian cinema in which he approximately 8.3 million on 4 May 2000 Australian dollars grossed. The film has been shown at a number of film festivals, including the UK's Commonwealth Film Festival on June 30, 2002 .
