Lore Berger , actually Lenore Berger (born December 17, 1921 in Basel ; † August 14, 1943 there ), was a Swiss writer .

Life

As the daughter of a teacher couple, Lore Berger had a well-protected childhood. After finishing school, she matriculated in 1939 with the subjects of German and Romance languages at the University of Basel . In 1941 she volunteered for the military women's service , for which she worked as an office assistant at a court until 1943.

In 1943 she wrote her novel The Mercy Hill. A story against Thomas published posthumously in 1944 . On August 14, 1943, Lore Berger fell from the water tower to her death on the Basel Bruderholz , the “merciful hill” from her novel . In her novel, she had let the character of Bea die exactly in this way. It can be assumed that the novel was only published because of Berger's suicide and the parallels in the novel in 1944. In 1981 the novel was reprinted and translated into French and Italian and was filmed in the same year by Beat Kuert under the title Die Zeit ist böse . In 2017 the story was published as a monologue under the title Esther. A story from Bruderholz performed at the Basel Theater.
