Loris S. Russell

Loris Shano Russell (* 21st April 1904 in Brooklyn , † 6. July 1998 in Toronto ) was a Canadian , from the United States originating geologist and vertebrate paleontologist specializing in dinosaurs .

Life

On his father's side, Russell came from an old American family (which can trace its origins back to the Mayflower ). His mother was Canadian. When he was four years old, the family came to Alberta , Canada, where he attended school in Calgary . In 1927 he made his bachelor's degree at the University of Alberta with the highest distinction (gold medal) and then studied geology at Princeton University with a master's degree in 1929 and a doctorate in 1930. He worked for the Research Council of Alberta, the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Toronto. From 1946 to 1950 he was director of the Royal Ontario Museum of Paleontology. In 1950 he went to the National Museum of Canada in Ottawa , first as head of the Zoology Department, from 1956 to 1963 as director of the natural history department and from 1958 to 1963 in addition to the department of human history responsible (Human History). He was then Senior Biologist at the Royal Ontario Museum and Professor of Geology at the University of Toronto . He officially retired in 1971, but was involved in excavations with his wife until 1992.

In addition to numerous publications in vertebrate paleontology, he has also published on early American archeology and early Canadian history. In 1959 he received the Willet G. Miller Medal . In 1992 he received the Romer Simpson Medal of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology , of which he is an honorary member (1977).

He was married but had no children.
