Lorne is a seaside resort on the Great Ocean Road in the Surf Coast Shire of the Australian state of Victoria .

Geographical location

On the Erskine River

The place is 140 km southwest of Melbourne at the mouth of the Erskine River and Loutit Bay . The densely wooded slopes of the Otway Ranges extend into the village.

population

The place had 1026 inhabitants in 2016. On holidays, this number is exceeded many times over by the number of guests. At the turn of the year, the place accommodates around 13,000 guests. The following weekend, when the big pier-to-pub swimming competition takes place, that number rises to 20,000 visitors.

history

Before it was settled by European immigrants, the area was inhabited by the nomadic Aboriginal people of the Gadubanud for more than 40,000 years . The bay on which Lorne lies is named after Captain Loutit , who anchored here in 1841 when he and his ship's crew were salvaging the cargo from a nearby wreck. In 1846 the coast was mapped. A few years later, the area began to be used for agriculture, initially on a small scale.

The first settler of European descent was William Lindsay, a lumberjack who began clearing the area in 1849. In 1859 the place was connected to the telegraph . In 1868 the Mountjoy brothers built a simple inn, around which more settlers' houses were gradually grouped. This later became the Erskine House Guesthouse . The building temporarily housed the church and the post office and telegraph office. In 1869 the parcelling began . In 1871 the place was named after the Marquis of Lorne in Argyleshire , Scotland, on the occasion of his marriage to one of Queen Victoria's daughters .

Around 1879 the place had 150 inhabitants. During this time the first pier , the state school and the Grand Pacific Hotel , Victoria's first bathing hotel, were built. The guests came either by ship or by train and carriage. The carriages of Mountjoy and Cobb & Co. took six hours to Lorne from the Winchelsea train station, which is just under 50 kilometers to the north . In 1891 the number of visitors increased further when the railway line was extended to Deans Marsh , 25 km northwest .

That year Rudyard Kipling visited the place. In his poem Flowers , this visit was reflected in the following verses:

"Buy a frond of fern, - Gathered where the Erskine leaps - Down the road to Lorne"

"Buy a fan of the fern - picked at the falls of the Erskine - on the road down to Lorne"

- Rudyard Kipling

1922 reached the Great Ocean Road Lorne and gave the place further impetus. After 1930 a number of other inns were built. A local fishing industry flourished in the 1930s and 1940s, but fell into decline in the 1980s.

In February 1983, the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires swept through the Otway Ranges. They destroyed 76 houses in Lorne.

tourism

The southern end of the 1.5 km long sandy beach is family-friendly, while the northern part is popular with surfers. The anglers gather on the pier to chase the barracuda , the whiting and the trevally . To the south of the small cape that closes off the town and Loutit Bay, Teddy's Lookout offers a beautiful view of the city and the coast.

The rainforest of the Otway Ranges, which extends into the village, offers rewarding hikes, especially a detour to the nearby Erskine Falls is worthwhile .

Yellow-crested cockatoo

The treetops in the village are populated by a horde of large, noisy yellow- crested cockatoos that are not afraid of being close to humans. With a bit of luck, you can also see smaller and rarer parrots and koalas in the treetops.

In November, when high school graduates celebrate graduation with Schoolies Week , Lorne is a popular destination for these teenagers. On the first weekend in January, 4,000 competitors and 20,000 spectators meet for the 1.2 km long Pier to Pub swim, the largest swimming competition in the world. One of the winners of this race was Kieren Perkins , Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder in 1,500m freestyle swimming.

Museums

The Lorne Historical Museum , open Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., documents the construction of the Great Ocean Road. The QD05 Contemporary Art Gallery , open every day except Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., shows contemporary art and a sculpture garden.
