The Lotharpfad is a forest adventure and educational trail in the Black Forest National Park on the Black Forest High Road between Schliffkopf and Alexanderschanze in the northern Black Forest . The name of the storm throwing adventure path goes back to the storm Lothar , which on December 26th, 1999 with wind speeds of up to 200 km / h tore a wide swath into the forest.

After mountain pastures had increasingly fallen fallow due to stable keeping and the abandonment of hay use, the plateaus of the northern Black Forest were initially reforested with spruce , which could not take deep roots in the red sandstone soil . In total, the storm in Baden-Württemberg tore around 30 million cubic meters of wood to the ground within two hours.

After the storm, the nature conservation and forest management decided to leave the 10  hectare storm thrown area, on which the Lothar path was later created, as a spell forest to be able to observe the natural regeneration over the long term.

In June 2003, an 800 m long educational and adventure trail was built on the Black Forest High Road (B 500) between Ruhestein and Kniebis - Alexanderschanze - as part of the Grindenschwarzwald project, which was funded by the European Union Broken wood passes over and under the fallen trees - the Lothar path in the narrower sense. A viewing platform offers a view of Braunberg, Lierbach, Oppenau , Strasbourg and the Vosges ; with good visibility to the Feldberg , the Kaiserstuhl and the Alps .

The Lotharpfad has been in the national park area since the national park was founded in 2014 and is now also looked after by the national park administration.

In 2007, there were reports of almost 50,000 visitors to the Lothar Path every year.
