Louis Braquaval
Louis Édouard Joseph Braquaval (born October 25, 1854 in Esquermes , now part of Lille , † November 19, 1919 in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme ) was a French painter and representative of Impressionism .
Life
Louis Édouard Joseph Braquaval was born in Esquermes (district of Lille since 1858) in 1854. On October 27, 1880, in Lille, he married Julia Sophie Guenez, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. The financial support of his father-in-law enabled him to give up his job as an auctioneer and devote himself to art. He studied in Honfleur under the famous painter Eugène Boudin , a friend of his wife's family. Around 1896 he befriended Edgar Degas , who saw him painting in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and spoke to him. Degas introduced Braquaval to Parisian artistic circles. Braquaval, in turn, probably encouraged Degas to do his later series of landscape paintings.
In 1914 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
He died in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme in 1919.
There is a painting by Boudin of Braquaval's house and garden in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme that Boudin gave to Braquaval's wife as a gift.

Like Boudin, he chose many motifs for his paintings from Normandy as well as Picardy , where the family had owned a house in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, a popular place for artists, since 1895. Braquaval chose market scenes particularly often, but he also painted Parisian street views, landscapes and some winter scenes.
Braquaval first exhibited in Paris in 1892. This was followed by exhibitions in Arras in 1898 , in the Salon de la Nationale from 1907 to 1914, in Paris in the Salon d'Automne from 1909 to 1910 and in the Salon des Independants.
In 1969 the Kaplan Gallery in London organized an exhibition on his work.
Works by him can be found in the following museums: Abbeville (Musée Boucher de Perthes, four pictures), Paris ( Musée d'Orsay ), Amiens (Musée Municipal, four pictures), Mulhouse (one picture), Buenos Aires ( Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , a picture)
