Louis Feuillée
Louis Éconches Feuillée (born April 18, 1660 in Mane near Forcalquier in Provence , † 1732 in Marseille ) was a French Paulaner priest , explorer , astronomer , geographer and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Feuillée ".
Life
Feuillée was trained in geography and natural history by Jean Mathieu de Chazelles (1657–1710) and Charles Plumier . In 1699 he traveled the eastern Mediterranean coast, from 1703 to 1706 a research trip to the Antilles and the north coast of South America followed . From 1707 to 1711 he made another sea voyage to South America to explore the coastal regions of Argentina , Chile and Peru .
He published the results of his travels after his return to France in the years 1714 to 1725. Louis XIV had a spacious residence with an observatory built for him near Marseilles .
One last research trip took Feuillée to the western Canary Islands in 1724 . From 1699 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences .
Honors
Carl von Linné named the genus Fevillea of the cucurbitaceae plant family in his honor .
In 1935, the International Astronomical Union named the Feuillée crater on the Earth's moon after him.
