Louis-Henri de Pardaillan de Gondrin (* around 1640, † December 1, 1691 or 1702 ), Marquis de Montespan et d ' Antin , Seigneur d' Épernon , was a French nobleman. He was Marquis d' Antin and Marquis de Montespan. He is best known as the husband of Madame de Montespan even before she became the mistress and later maîtresse en titre of Louis XIV .

biography

Louis Henri de Pardaillan is the son of Roger Hector de Pardaillan , Marquis d'Antin and Marquis de Montespan, and Marie-Christine de Zamet. He married Françoise de Rochechouart on January 28, 1663 , who was called Mlle de Tonnay-Charente before their marriage , daughter of Gabriel de Rochechouart , Duc de Mortemart , and Diane de Grandseigne, from whom he had two children:

As the husband of Mlle de Tonnay-Charente, or now Madame de Montespan, he was also Chevalier d'honneur of Henrietta of England , Madame and Duchess of Orléans as the wife of Philippe I de Bourbon, Duke of Orléans .

After his wife had become the mistress of Louis XIV in May 1667 - which, according to the unanimous opinion, she had worked towards for years - the Marquis de Montespan did not rule as was generally expected. At a time when most aristocratic husbands were flattered by the king's interest in their own wife and tried to take advantage of it (as the Rochechouart family pointed out), the marquis amazed the court by talking to himself openly outraged at his wife's infidelity. He sparked a scandal by accusing Madame de Montausier of selfish pimp. He even wore mourning clothes for his wife and had a pair of horns attached to his carriage as a public sign that she had betrayed him. Montespan was arrested but released a few days later. According to Madame Caylus , he was seen at court “for a rude person and for a fool”, and the Montespan herself complained: “He is here telling stories at court. I'm so ashamed that my parrot and he is the scum are for amusement. "

The Marquis was exiled to Spain and in 1674 an official separation was pronounced by the General Procurator Achille de Harlay, assisted by six judges at the Châtelet .

Around 1690 he inherited the Duchy of Épernon (without the duke title) from the family of his maternal grandmother, Jeanne de Goth. He was also the presumptive heir to his aunt Anne-Marie de Sainte-Lary († 1715; ⚭ Jean-Antoine-Arnaud de Pardaillan , † 1687) through his grandmother Paule de Saint-Lary († 1612; ⚭ Antoine-Arnaud de Pardaillan) , † 1624), who bequeathed the Duchy of Bellegarde to the descendants of the Marquis de Montespan (also here without the title).

He died on December 1, 1691 at the age of 51. His son, Louis-Antoine , becomes his heir - also with regard to the Duchy of Épernon; in March 1711 he was appointed Duke of Antin and Pair de France . In 1715 he also inherits the goods of the old Duchy of Bellegarde.
