Love Bites (English for: " Liebe bites ") is a song by the British rock band Def Leppard . It was released as a single from their album Hysteria in August 1988 . The song is Def Leppard's only number one hit in the US to this day. The title of the song was originally the working title of the song " I Wanna be Your Hero ", which was released in 1987 as the B-side of the Hysteria single.

Commercial win

After the success of the single Pour Some Sugar on Me , which reached number 2 in the US, Love Bites was released in August 1988. After a few weeks it became their only number one hit in the US. It took Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry, Be Happy from the top. The single was at the top for a week and was then replaced by UB40's Red Red Wine . In the UK , the single reached # 11 in the UK Top 40 .

The final sequence of Love Bites

The ending at the end of the song is very popular among fans. The lead singer of the band sings " If you've got love in your sights, watch out, love bites ", while the rest of the band members shout (according to a popular rumor) " Jesus of Nazareth, go to Hell ". In their documentary on Hysteria , the band stated that the content was different. In fact, producer Mutt Lange can be heard answering the line with "Yes it does, bloody Hell" . The final sequence of the song was recorded with a vocoder .
