Loverboy (alternate title: gentle violence ) is an American drama film directed by Kevin Bacon from 2005. The main role was played by Kyra Sedgwick .

The story is based on a novel by Victoria Redel of the same name and is about a mother's exaggerated love for her only child, which makes her paranoid and drives her to suicide.

action

Emily Stoll was emotionally neglected as a child by her parents Marty and Sybil . When her father falls ill, her parents commit suicide together, leaving their daughter alone. So she grew up with Mrs. Harker, the neighbor who was a very caring foster mother to her.

Emily is now financially independent, but extremely depressed. She is desperately trying to get pregnant and has sexual intercourse with all kinds of men. After a miscarriage, she finally wants to give up, but fate finally means well and she becomes pregnant. Emily has a son whom she is now raising alone. From then on she puts Paul at the center of her life. She isolates him from other people and does not want him to go to school at first. In order to be particularly close to him, both of them often sleep in a tent or in the car. On vacation before starting school, she meets a geologist whom Paul regards as a father figure. That bothers Emily at first, but she also sees this as a welcome opportunity to keep Paul away from school by staying longer at the vacation spot. When he does go to school, she can't stand him adapting and making friends. She tries to regain his dwindling attention and, due to invented allergies, often reports him to school as sick in order to take him on excursions. The teachers quickly figure it out and point out that she is insane and paranoid .

One evening she spent the night in the car again with Paul, but this time in the closed garage with the engine running to kill both of them with the exhaust fumes. Emily dies, but Paul manages to climb out of the car. However, he collapses in front of the car, where he is found by the neighbor the next morning. He lives and will get well again.

Reviews

  • Kyle Smith praised the direction of Kevin Bacon, who made his debut in this capacity, in the New York Post .
  • Carina Chocano certified the film as "humor" and "energy" in the Los Angeles Times .

Kai Vollbrecht writes at Zelluloid.de: “Actor Kevin Bacon has made a good directorial debut with this literary film adaptation. He knows how to impressively showcase beautiful places, beautiful and difficult interpersonal relationships and, above all, his own wife. The scenes from the 1970s, in which he also appears as an actor, perfectly match the timbre. "

At Moviesection.de, Thomas Ays judges positively and awards all five possible stars. He praised Bacon's directorial debut and said that he “tackled and implemented it very impressively”. “It has turned out to be an impressive and extraordinary portrait of a different woman that one cannot easily judge and wave through. At least one should deal socially with the approaches of her figure. "
