biography

Quélet, born in Montécheroux , Doubs department, to a farmer's son, was soon orphaned. He spent his childhood with his aunt, who raised him. In his youth he showed great interest in mycology and general botany . He was also interested in ornithology and malacology . He was taught at Montbéliard College. He later studied medicine in Strasbourg .

In 1884 he founded the Mycological Association, better known under the name Société mycologique de France, of which he became the first president. A few years later he wrote a book called Mycological Flora of France .

Quélet described different species as part of his mycological research. Some are listed here:

Russula queletii and Boletus queletii were named after Quélet and in honor of his contributions to mycology.

Quélet himself has been described by some as a combination of Hermann Karsten and Paul Kummer ; this included his studies, his mycological research skills, and the number of new species he discovered. Much of Quélet's work is still useful today, and many names of popular mushrooms can be traced back to Quélet's work.

Quélet broadened the range of his studies during the last years of his life; he began to take an interest in things that fascinated him in his youth - u. a. Ornithology and Malacology. Lucien Quélet died in 1899 at the age of 67.
