Ludwig Dürrwaechter

Ludwig Dürrwaechter (old spelling Duerrwaechter; born June 20, 1897 in Bamberg , † October 21, 1964 in Munich ) was a German animal breeding scientist and farmer .

After high school and practical apprenticeship, he studied agriculture at the Technical University of Munich and graduated with a state examination as a certified farmer . In 1922 the doctorate to Dr. rer. techn. at the agr. Department of the Technical University of Munich and the animal breeding manager examination for the higher administrative service. After a brief activity in the Donauwörth animal breeding office, Dürrwaechter became head of the branch and later the animal breeding office in Günzburg in 1924. During this time the mast performance testing institute Nußlacherhof was established. From 1934 to 1945 Dürrwaechter was the head of the animal breeding department in the Bavarian state farming community. He implemented the new Reich ordinance of 1936 on the licensing of sire animals for his region. In 1943 he qualified as a professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at the Technical University of Munich for animal breeding.

After the end of the Second World War he became head of department in the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry. Here he campaigned for the restart of the animal breeding associations, supported the development of the research institutes and created the prerequisites for training animal breeding personnel for Bavaria. From 1954 he was - now in the rank of ministerial director - head of the animal production department . He encouraged the establishment of the Animal Breeding Research Association and dealt with the fight against tuberculosis and epidemic calving ( Abortus Bang ), with the introduction and expansion of artificial insemination in cattle as well as with the development of the progeny testing in wards and the application of the results blood group research,

From 1958 to 1962 Dürrwaechter was chairman of the German Society for Breeding Science . He was also elected 1st Vice-President of the European Association for Animal Production (EVT), and from 1962 to 1965 he was 1st Vice-President of the European Association of Simmental Breeders (EVF). The veterinary faculty of the University of Munich appointed him honorary professor for animal breeding in 1959. He published over 200 articles in agricultural and veterinary journals and devoted himself particularly to the problems of farms - his breeding primer appeared in 10 editions between 1948 and 1962.
