Ludwig Ernst Gebhardi

Ludwig Ernst Gebhardi (born January 1, 1787 in Nottleben ; † May 29, 1862 in Erfurt ) was a German organist .

Life

Ludwig Ernst Gebhardi received his first music lessons at the age of four from his father Johann Jeremias Gebhardi. From 1801 he attended the Ratsgymnasium in Erfurt . Here he learned to play the piano and figured bass with Michael Gotthard Fischer . From 1810 he studied theology in Jena .

From 1812 Gebhardi worked as a teacher in Erfurt. The following year he became organist at the Barfüßerkirche . In order to perfect his musical skills, he visited the Gotha Kapellmeister Andreas Romberg in 1817 and Johann Nepomuk Hummel in Weimar in 1820 .

In 1820 Gebhardi took over the office of organist in the Predigerkirche from his former teacher Fischer. After his death in 1829, Gebhardi also became a teacher of music theory and organ playing at the Erfurt teachers' seminar . In addition, he was vice-principal of the preacher's school and singing teacher at the Ratsgymnasium.

In 1832 he was awarded the title of Royal Music Director . His four-part canon Glory to God on high is contained in the church hymn books CG , EG , EM , KG and RG .
