Ludwig IV , called the Meek , (born January 1, 1424 in Heidelberg ; † August 13, 1449 in Worms ) was Count Palatine and Elector of the Palatinate from 1436 to 1449.

Life

His parents were Ludwig III. von der Pfalz (1378–1436) and Princess Mechthild of Savoy (1390–1438). After his father died in 1436, his uncle, Count Palatine Otto I , took over the guardianship until Ludwig was declared of age in 1442. In 1444 he fended off attacks by the Armagnaks as imperial governor . When he died in Worms in 1449 at the age of 25, his successors were first his brother Friedrich , then his only son Philipp . Ludwig is buried in the Heidelberg Church of the Holy Spirit .

Elector Ludwig IV married Princess Margaret of Savoy , daughter of Duke Amadeus VIII (later antipope Felix V ), and his wife Princess Marie of Burgundy (* 1380; † 1422) on October 18, 1445 in Heidelberg . The son Philip the Sincere came out of the marriage.
