Hans Wertinger (* around 1465/70 probably in Landshut ; † November 17, 1533 there ), also known as Hans Schwab von Wertinger or Schwabmaler , was a German draftsman , painter and glass painter of the late Gothic and Renaissance periods . He is considered an important representative of the Altlandshut painting school.

Life

Hans Wertinger was probably born in Landshut . The name Wertinger and the designation Schwabmaler indicate the origin of his family from the town of Wertingen , which today belongs to the district of Dillingen an der Donau in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia . Through his marriage to Elisabeth, the daughter of a silk embroiderer, Hans Wertinger acquired Landshut citizenship in 1491 . From 1511 to 1531 he owned the house at Kirchgasse 228, on which there is a memorial plaque today.

Hans Wertinger was probably trained in the workshop of the Landshut painter Sigmund Gleismüller . He received his commissions mainly from the Freising Prince-Bishop Philipp von der Pfalz and from Duke Ludwig X. of Bavaria, who resided in Landshut. In 1518 Hans Wertinger is named as his court painter.

In addition to some altarpieces, Hans Wertinger mainly created portraits and a series of monthly and seasonal images. His portraits are usually framed by garlands on top . As the most important lead glass window , the Annunciation window in the Cathedral of the Beautiful Our Lady in Ingolstadt has been preserved.

Hans Wertinger found his final resting place in the old Franciscan monastery.
