Ludwig Strecker the Elder

Ludwig Philipp Carl Wilhelm Strecker (born March 26, 1853 in Dieburg , † December 19, 1943 in Mainz ) was a German music publisher .

Ludwig Strecker was born in Dieburg in 1853 as the son of a lawyer. At the age of ten the father was transferred to Darmstadt. Strecker had completed his law studies with a doctorate and worked in the management of the publishing house B. Schott's Sons (Mainz).

Due to the lack of children in the founding family, he inherited the company in 1874 from the suddenly deceased Franz Schott . He worked u. a. as publisher of Richard Wagner , whose difficult demands and constant financial needs he was able to compensate again and again through moderate negotiation. The Siegfried Idyll and the text version ( 1877 ) and the score of " Parsifal " ( 1882 ) were published by Schott.

Strecker got involved a. a. at the concert association Mainzer Liedertafel . He was its president for 25 years.

At the age of 29, Strecker married Elisabeth Merck, the ten years younger daughter of the Darmstadt entrepreneur. The couple had four sons and one daughter. When Ludwig Strecker the Elder died on December 19, 1943, Ludwig Strecker the Younger took over the management of the publishing house together with his brother Wilhelm. Ludwig Strecker is buried in the main cemetery in Mainz .

  • Awarded the title of Privy Councilor of Commerce by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig
  • 1909: He was appointed by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig as a lifelong member of the first chamber of the estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse , of which he was a member until the November Revolution of 1918.
