Ludwig von Bothmer

Ludwig Friedrich Ernst von Bothmer (born March 3, 1817 in Nienburg / Weser , † September 23, 1873 in Cologne ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and governor of Cologne.

Life

origin

He was the son of the Hanoverian Major General Ernst von Bothmer (1770-1849) and his wife Wilhelmine, born of Mansberg (1781-1838).

Military career

Bothmer attended high school in Bückeburg , then was a cadet in the Guards Jäger Battalion of the Hanover Army and rose to major general on May 27, 1865. During the war against Prussia , Bothmer led the 4th Infantry Brigade in the battle of Langensalza . Despite the victory, the army surrendered two days later and the kingdom was annexed by Prussia. Bothmer then resigned from the Hanoverian service and was employed on March 9, 1867 as major general with a patent from November 26, 1865 in the Prussian Army . Initially he was active in the 20th Division and was given command of the 12th Infantry Brigade on August 10, 1867 . On July 18, 1870, he was appointed troop commander in Cologne with the powers of a division commander and eight days later he was promoted to lieutenant general.

At the beginning of the war against France , on August 22, 1870, he was appointed commander of a detachment for the containment of Thionville . After the war, he took command of the 13th Division from July 1871 to March 29, 1873 .

family

Bothmer married Louise Leue (1837–1922) on February 24, 1859 in Hildesheim . She was the daughter of the Hanover government councilor Friedrich Leue and Auguste von dem Knesebeck . The marriage had five children.

Bothmer died on September 23, 1873 at the age of 56 and was buried in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne . His mother-in-law Auguste, who died four days later, was buried next to him.
