Friedrich Ludwig von Maydell (born November 29 . Jul / 10. December  1795 greg. In Teenuse , † September 6 jul. / 18th September  1846 greg. In Tallinn ) was a Baltic German painter, graphic artist and sculptor. He is considered one of the most important representatives of Romanticism in the Baltic States and a pioneer of xylography in Estonia .

Life

Friedrich Ludwig von Maydell was born at the end of 1795 on the estate of the noble Baltic German family Maydell in Teenuse (German Stenhusen ), forty kilometers southeast of Haapsalu ( Hapsal ). From 1812 to 1820 he served in the Imperial Russian Army . In 1813/1814 he fought in the war against Napoleon . He took part in the conquest of Paris by the Allied troops.

From 1820, von Maydell studied drawing with the famous Baltic German painter Karl August Senff (1770–1838) at the Livonian University of Dorpat in addition to studying law . In 1822 he gave up his studies in law in order to devote himself entirely to art. From 1822 to 1827 he continued his education in Germany ( Berlin , Dresden , Stuttgart ) and Italy . In Rome , his encounters with the Nazarenes had a great influence on his artistic work. Here he became a close friend of Ludwig Richter .

In 1827 von Maydell returned to his Baltic homeland. From 1829, von Maydell lived and worked as a freelance artist in Tartu. There he founded a woodcutting workshop in 1835 , the first in the entire Russian Empire. He was an active member of the Estonian Scholarly Society .

Friedrich Ludwig von Maydell is buried in the cemetery of Kullamaa ( Goldenbeck ).

Friedrich Ludwig von Maydell became known to a larger audience primarily through his book illustrations. These include works on the Song of Solomon and the works of Pushkin and de la Motte Fouqués . In addition, von Maydell illustrated the collection of Estonian folk tales by Friedrich Robert Faehlmann and Estonian calendar literature. For the work Fifty Pictures from the History of the German Baltic Sea Provinces of Russia , which appeared in two issues in 1839 and 1842, he contributed 22 works.

Von Maydell also created altar paintings for the churches of Saarde (1835), Rūjiena (1837), Kõpu and Põlva (1845) as well as various portrait busts. He was largely responsible for the planning of the neo-Gothic interior of the Olaikirche ( Oleviste kirik ) of Tallinn ( Reval ), in particular the altar, church doors and pulpit. He also created the plans for the grave chapel of the German Baltic von Grünewaldt family on the Esna estate ( Orrisaar ). In addition, he published textbooks for the art of drawing.
