The Luhnau is a river in Schleswig-Holstein . It was a left tributary of the Eider . With the construction of the Kiel Canal it was cut off there. Since then it has been flowing into the canal.

The Luhnau begins 2.5 kilometers south of the municipality of Luhnstedt in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district , to which it gave its name. In the first few kilometers, as it flows north, it often runs under fields with pipes. At Luhnstedt it changes the direction of flow to the northwest. Its confluence with the Kiel Canal lies on the edge of the nature reserve "Spülflächen Schachtholm". The former confluence with the Eider is about 2 kilometers away. The separated section is still there as a trench. Backwaters are Barlau , Holtdorfer Au and Krambek .

The river was in 1339 Lunowe called, in the 17th century Lünow . The name probably comes from Old Saxon and means "swamp brook".

According to the state ordinance for the implementation of the state fisheries law of 2008 of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the Luhnau belongs to the fishing district of the river basin unit Eider (catchment area North Sea) . The Luhnau Water and Soil Association, located at the Nortorfer Land Office , is responsible for the Luhnau . The Kiel Canal is part of the Elbe river basin district .
