Player career

Luigi Danova, born in 1952 in the Lombard town of Sant'Angelo Lodigiano , began playing football in the youth of the local ASD Sant'Angelo club in 1907 . There he also played his first 26 games in adult football from 1969 to 1970. In 1970 the young defender was signed by Juventus Turin , but could not prevail in the Turin star ensemble. After a season without appearances, Danova found a new employer in AC Como in the summer of 1971 . Under coach Eugenio Bersellini , Danova matured to become a regular at the northern Italian second division club. In the first season after his arrival, promotion to Serie A was missed by only two points compared to SSC Palermo . In the following year, however, only a midfield jumped out. In 1973 Luigi Danova changed employers again and joined AC Cesena , where he finally made his breakthrough. After Cesena rose to Serie A in 1972/73, they were pretty sure to stay in the first division in the first year. With Bersellini as coach, whom Danova still knew from Como , AC Cesena took a strong eleventh place in the 1973/74 Serie A as a promoted team. The next season was completed with the same placement and again the safe place in the class. The 1975/76 season finally became the most successful in the history of AC Cesena to date. With Luigi Danova as a top performer, the club achieved a surprising sixth place in Serie A and thus qualified for the first and to date only time for the European competition. Luigi Danova left AC Cesena in the summer of 1976 after three years and 88 league games with a goal, he moved to Torino Calcio .

In Turin Luigi Danova experienced his longest and most successful phase as a football player. Started as reigning champions in Serie A in 1976/77 , the season ended with the runner-up, just behind local rivals Juventus Turin . After that, the performances in the league decreased again, but in the Coppa Italia Torino Calcio delivered three finals in a row between 1979 and 1982. The beginning was made in the Coppa Italia 1979/80 , where after successes against Lazio Rome and Juventus in quarter-finals and semi-finals in the final against AS Roma . There you had to admit defeat after 0-0 after extra time on penalties. The following year it was similar for Torino Calcio. Once again they qualified for the final, where they met the Roma again . After the first and second leg had ended 1-1, it went back to penalties, where AS Roma once again had the upper hand. And the third participation in the finals in a row was negative for Torino Calcio. In the Coppa Italia 1981/82 they made it back to the final, but lost to Inter Milan 2-1 on the return leg. Luigi Danova was there in all of the finals of these three years.

After 246 league games for Torino Calcio, Danova left the club in the summer of 1985, after finishing runner-up behind Hellas Verona . He joined the up-and-coming southern Italian first division promoted US Lecce , but with whom he immediately relegated from Serie A. In the following year, fourth in Serie B, they narrowly missed the direct return to the first division against AC Cesena. In 1987 Danova moved to AC Mantova , where he was again under contract for two years and made 65 games in Serie C2 and Serie C1 by 1989 .
