Luigi Malice

Luigi Malice (* 1937 in Naples , Italy ) is an Italian avant-garde artist .

Life

Malice was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he attended courses from Emilio Notte . of great importance. His painterly beginnings in 1960 reveal a figurative structure that seems to be influenced by the direction Novecento . During this period there was the influence of painters such as Striccoli, Chiancone and Brancaccio. At the beginning of the 1960s, Malice came closer to informal art , with a preference for the “material” aspect, which he copied from Domenico Spinosa. In 1963 Malice moved to Calabria . In the works of these years, as Giorgio Di Genova notes, “constructivist tendencies and lyrical devotion” alternate; sometimes they come into contrast with expressionistic “expulsions” and are resolved by chromatic accumulations, some of which are reminiscent of atmospheric phenomena or air movements, and some of which become matter through implosive concentrations of colors. In all of these solutions the two sides of the informal, the "abstraction lyrique" and the "abstract expressionism", are mixed up .

From 1968, Malice's artistic interests no longer consisted of the contrast between light and color, but of light and shadow. This new form of art, " Topological Art", called "Top Art" for short, lives from the effects that the modulation of the shadow exerts on the surfaces through the use of modeled, multi-layered wooden frames, which are covered with a (mostly) white, waxy sheet are covered plastically. Malice's Top Art is the result of a personal observation of contemporary photokinetic-visual research in Europe. On the one hand, he looked from the creation of the shaped canvases of the minimalists (artists such as Enrico Castellani , Agostino Bonalumi or Simeti), on the other hand, he orientated himself on the original works of the Apulian artist Pino Pascali. In Malice's shaped sheets, the connection between essential shapes (such as circles, sinus lines , etc.) and mostly anthropomorphic silhouettes was evident . This phase lasted for almost 20 years until the mid-1980s. Then Malice returned to painting and began the era of the “New Informal Era ”, which is still relevant today. Until 2007, Luigi Malice was a lecturer at the Academy of Art in Reggio Calabria , from 1984 to 1989 its director.

His most important exhibitions include those at the Palazzo Reale in Naples in December 1992 and the anthological exhibition in Reggio Calabria, “Luigi Malice. Percorsi della Memoria. 1959 - 1999 ” , as well as the two exhibitions in Bayswater (at the“ DOC Art Gallery ”) and in Perth (“ Artage Gallery ”) during his stay in Western Australia last March during an Italian-Australian cultural exchange. In February 2011, Malice's participation in the 54th exhibition of the Venice Biennale was recommended by critic Giorgio di Genova.
