Luigi Maria Cardelli OFM (born August 28, 1777 in Rome , † June 11, 1868 there ) was an Italian clergyman and archbishop of Izmir .

Life

He entered the order of the Franciscan Observants and took the religious vows on December 5, 1794 . After being sent to the Levant , he settled in Constantinople in December 1807 . There Luigi Maria Cardelli became pastor of Santa Maria Draperis and on March 20, 1812 Apostolic Prefect .

Luigi Maria Cardelli was appointed Vicar Apostolic on September 14, 1815 by the Congregation Propaganda Fide and, by decree of December 18, 1817, was appointed Latin Archbishop of Smyrna (Izmir) on March 18, 1818. He received his episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year in Chios Francesco Saverio Dracopoli , Bishop of Chios . In Izmir, Luigi Maria Cardelli had to face the effects of the Greek struggle for independence . On November 16, 1829, he submitted his resignation, which was only granted on August 29, 1832. On the same day he was named titular archbishop of Achrida . He was then from November 11, 1835 consultor of the Congregation Propaganda Fide , from March 6, 1839 consultor of the Holy Office and from April 30, 1842 prelate of the Congregation for Ecclesiastical Immunity . Eventually he became a canon of the Vatican Basilica on May 27, 1838 , which he remained until his death.
