The Archdiocese of Izmir ( Latin Archidioecesis smyrnensis ) is in Turkey situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Izmir .
history
Izmir became a bishopric very early on. With Polycarp of Smyrna a bishop is attested in the 2nd century. He was subordinate to the Archbishop of Ephesus. From the 9th century, Smyrna formed its own ecclesiastical province. The Latin Archdiocese of Smyrna was canonically in 1346 by Pope Clement VI. built. In 1575 the archbishopric was dissolved and a titular bishopric was created. In 1625 the Apostolic Vicariate of Smyrna was founded. The Archdiocese of Izmir was founded on March 18, 1818 with the bull Apostolatus officium of Pius VII and is a metropolitan diocese without suffragan dioceses .
