Ruggero Franceschini
Ruggero Franceschini OFMCap (born September 1, 1939 in Saltino, municipality of Prignano sulla Secchia , Province of Modena , Italy ) is an Italian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Metropolitan and Archbishop of Izmir and Apostolic Administrator of the Vicariate Apostolic Anatolia in Turkey .
Life
Ruggero Franceschini joined in 1955 the Congregation of the Capuchins in, put 1,960 professed , and received the 1963 ordination . After further studies and doctorates in philosophy and classical languages at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, he taught at the seminary of the Capuchins in Parma .
In addition to various offices in the Capuchin Order, he was superior of the Capuchin Custody in Turkey since 1985 .
Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Sicilibba in 1993 and appointed him Vicar Apostolic of the Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia . He received his episcopal ordination on October 3, 1993, the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches , Achille Silvestrini ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Izmir, Giuseppe Germano Bernardini , and the Archbishop of Camerino-San Severino Marche , Francesco Gioia . In 2004 he was appointed Archbishop of Izmir.
He was chairman of the Turkish Bishops' Conference .
After the assassination of Luigi Padovese he was by Pope Benedict XVI. also appointed Apostolic Administrator for Anatolia.
In the two dioceses entrusted to him, he has renovated many churches in cooperation with local authorities, about 1998, the historic church Mater Dolorosa of Samsun . The cathedral church of St. John the Evangelist in Izmir was made freely accessible to the public on October 29, 2013 after the contract with NATO was terminated, and a cathedral priest was appointed.
Before the Pope's visit to Turkey from November 28 to 30, 2014, Archbishop Franceschini expressed his hope that Pope Francis would also find time to visit Syrian and Iraqi refugee families in the Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia (= "in the South"). Pope Francis then spoke to young refugees in the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Istanbul within the tight timeframe .
On November 7, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation as Archbishop of Izmir.
