Luigi Padovese OFMCap (born March 31, 1947 in Milan , Italy , † June 3, 2010 in İskenderun , Turkey ) was a Roman Catholic Bishop and Vicar Apostolic of Anatolia in Turkey. Until his murder he was chairman of the Turkish Bishops' Conference .

Life

education

Luigi Padovese joined in 1965 the Congregation of the Capuchins in, put there in 1968 professed from and received on 16 June 1973, the priestly ordination . He studied theology at the Pontifical University Antonianum and patristics and religious history at the Pontifical Gregorian University . From 1977 he taught patristics and the history of theology at the Capuchin Theological Studies in Milan. In 1979 he moved to the Pontifical Institute for Missions Abroad . In 1995 he was appointed full professor of patrology at the Antonianum, later he also taught the history of spirituality (patristic and late antiquity) at the Gregoriana as a visiting professor .

In addition to various tasks in the Capuchin Order, he was President of the Franciscan Institute for Spirituality since 1990.

Vicar Apostolic of Anatolia

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Monteverde in 2004 and appointed him Vicar Apostolic of Anatolia . He was ordained bishop on November 7, 2004, by the Apostolic Nuncio in Turkey, Archbishop Edmond Y. Padovese assassination

Padovese was stabbed to death on June 3, 2010 in front of his house in the Mediterranean port of İskenderun and then beheaded. His driver Murat Altun, who is described as mentally unstable, was arrested as a suspected murderer. Honorary citizenships

Luigi Padovese received the honorary citizenship of the municipality of Stegaurach (Bamberg district) in 2007 .

Naming of places and buildings

By resolution of the Stegaurach local council, the village square near the church was renamed "Luigi-Padovese-Platz" in memory of the honorary citizen. A monument was also unveiled in the square. The parish home of the parish of Stegaurach, which was re-inaugurated in 2012 after a new building, was named after the bishop for the parish home "Luigi Padovese".
