What remains is fear (alternative title: Revenge from the realm of the dead ; original title: Ghost Story ) is an American horror film from 1981 . Directed by John Irvin and written by Lawrence D. Cohen . The film is based on the novel Ghost Story by Peter Straub , which was published in German under the title Geisterstunde .
action
The action takes place in New England . An elderly group of Ricky Hawthorne, John Jaffrey, Edward Charles Wanderley, and Sears James that calls themselves The Chowder Society pass the time telling the ghost stories. Wanderley's son sees his bride's face as that of a water corpse and dies. The men are confronted with the ghost of a woman who they murdered decades ago and with whom all members of the group were in love. The ghost kills the group members in revenge.
