Luigi Martella (born March 9, 1948 in Depressa , Province of Lecce , Italy , † July 6, 2015 in Molfetta ) was an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Molfetta-Ruvo-Giovinazzo-Terlizzi .

Life

Luigi Martella studied philosophy and theology at the seminary of Treviso and the Pontifical Interregional Seminary of Posillipo . On April 10, 1977, he received the sacrament of ordination . After completing a theological licentiate degree at the Pontificia Facoltà Teologica dell'Italia Meridionale , he completed a doctorate in moral theology at the Pontifical Alfonsian Academy in Rome . From 1979 to 1994 he was a teacher at the F. Capece Lyceum in Maglie, and a lecturer in ethics at the School of Learning Nurses at Card Hospital . G. Panico in Tricase and Professor of Moral Theology at the Institute for Religious Studies Giovanni Paolo II in Otranto .

From 1979 to 1986 he was rector of the pilgrimage church "Madonna del Rosario" in Castro and from 1986 to 1994 its first pastor. He was diocesan assistant for families of the Catholic Action (1980-1994). In 1994 he became spiritual at the Pontifical Seminary of Molfetta and took over the moral theological training at the Istituto Teologico Pugliese .

On December 13, 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Molfetta-Ruvo-Giovinazzo-Terlizzi. The Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto , Francesco Cacucci , donated him episcopal ordination on March 10, 2001 ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Otranto , Donato Negro , and the Apostolic Nuncio in Madagascar , Archbishop Bruno Musarò . He was vice director of all the seminaries in Italy.

He was prior of the Molfetta Commandery of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
