Luigi Poggi, who for the Yacht Club Italiano sailed, was in 1936 at the Olympic Games in Berlin in the 8-meter class Olympic champion . He was a crew member of the Italia under skipper Giovanni Reggio , which won one of the seven races and with 55 points the regatta taking place in the Olympic harbor Düsternbrook in Kiel just ahead of the Silja from Norway and the Germania III from the German Reich with 53 points each.
